Blessings Above - Part I

A friend of mine, Pastorpher, called on Saturday asking me if I am comfortable to allow him to share a story of mine to help the youth especially the girls in a camp in Cameron Highlands.

Pastorpher, as you can guess by the name is a pastor or rather a youth pastor in TRAC Methodist. I knew him before he became a pastor. He was indeed a friend whom you can rely on in times of need. He laugh with you, cry with you and crack dirty jokes with you (Oops!) And he will travel distance away just to see if you are okay. Today he and his wife are serving the youth ministry touching many lives of the youth in our urban city, Kuala Lumpur. Their love for the youth has earned them many friends and children. You can never find another couple like them both.

When Pastopher asked me if it was okay to share my story, I did not hesitated once and said “Yes of course!” It gave me great pleasure knowing that this story of mine can be a testimony today. As I reflected on that particular journey, I can’t thank God enough for his goodness, grace and mercy.

My story was a story of a young girl who fell in love with a boy whom she thought was the best guy she had ever met. But one thing that had kept the girl so strong and protective of the relationship was because she believed that God was a merciful God and that God loved everyone, including those who have yet to receive Jesus as Saviour. Friends who had tried to warn her were rejected by her as being judgmental and unchristian like. Besides Christians are to love everyone and accept everyone just as God did. And without realizing it, instead of being closer to God, she draws herself away further. “Someday” she always said “Someday, he will accept God and we shall serve Him together!”

As the years goes by, she began to walk closer to God and getting to know her Saviour more. She realized that the young boy and her are drifting apart for they are losing common grounds together. But she had held on still in her belief. But one day, something was said to her that made her knelt before God and cried like a broken ragged doll. And she heard a clear voice telling her if she were to sacrifice her relationship like how Abraham had laid Isaac on the alter table, she will be blessed. She wept and wept her whole heart that evening. In tears she called a friend and the friend without knowing what went wrong told her of Abraham and Isaac.

She knew that she had to give up this relationship. When God told Abraham to sacrifice Isaac on the alter table, Abraham, without questioning God, had immediately obeyed. As soon as the sun came up, she went to the young boy and told him that she can no longer carry on with the relationship. It was not easy and it did break her heart that very moment. But God gave her strength and healed her broken heart.

Out of obedience and not knowing what God had in stored for her, she did as she was told, as she knew she had to obey the Lord.

That young girl was me 5 years ago. Who would have thought that today that story of mine can be testimony?
